How To Make Flatlays Personal On Your Wedding Day
One of the most underrated but highly important portions of your wedding day are flatlays. You know those beautifully curated photos you see with the invitations, trinkets, jewelry, veil, etc? Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about! Your wedding flatlays are one of the first things that your wedding photographer will typically take photos of when they arrive on your wedding day. However, rather than just slapping together some pretty details and calling it a day, we have something much better in mind. Your wedding flatlay details are more than just a one and done shot and you’re finished. It’s about telling a story and making it personal to your wedding day. How do we do that? Well, I’m glad you asked.
What Is A Flatlay?

A wedding flatlay is a curated, styled image that showcases your wedding colors, details, and accessories. A flatlay is created to help build out and tell your love story, without the use of people. A little something blue, something old, and a way to beautifully start out your wedding day.
It takes a certain skill to put these together and while I am no magic wizard at doing flatlays, I will say I’m not too shabby!
How to Make Your Flatlay Personal On Your Wedding Day?
Your flatlay should be more than just something your wedding photographer throws together. It should be done with intention to help tell your love story and make it incredibly personal on your wedding day. Here is how you can do that.
What To Include In Your Wedding Flatlay Details
It’s important that when you are thinking about what to include in your wedding flatlays, you are choosing pieces that not only work together but pieces that make sense. Here are just a few key items that I suggest adding to your list of wedding details that will help curate the perfect wedding flatlay.
-
Dried fruit that matches the aesthetic and time of year
-
Color coordinating pieces to your wedding theme
-
Vintage pieces (eyeglasses, trays)
-
Modern Pieces
-
Ring Boxes
-
Veil or Tie
-
Perfume or Cologne
-
Socks and/or Shoes
Whenever a wedding day rolls around I always like to bring along my “flatlay emergency kit” if you want to call it that. This is the kit that has everything that I would need to help curate the perfect wedding flatlay just in case we feel there is a certain component or element that’s missing. In this kit I will provide trays, ring boxes, ribbon, spices LOL, dried fruit, spools, acrylic styling blocks, backdrops, etc. Time and dedication go into creating your flatlay and we need to make it pure perfection!
Gather Everything Together Prior To Your Wedding Day
Prior to your wedding day, you want to make sure that you gather all of your wedding details in a box labeled for your wedding photographer. The last thing you want is the morning of your wedding to be scrambling to find everything for your flatlays in order for your wedding photographer to start. Planning ahead of time and having a special box labeled with your detail items will not only save you time but a ton of worry as well.
Ask Your Florist For Floral Clippings
For your wedding flatlay details, ask your wedding florist in advance for floral clippings strictly for your detail photos. This is the perfect way to incorporate those beautiful florals you took time picking out as well as tying in your wedding theme. Adding these floral trimmings to your wedding flatlay can make the world of a difference so I highly recommend you asking your florist for some trimmings. You won’t regret it!
Bring 2 Full Invitation Suites

If all other preparation fails, I encourage you to at least bring 2 full invitation suites for your wedding photographer to use in your flatlays. You’d be surprised what we can work with when we are given just a beautiful set of invitations, so when it doubt…. bring the suites.
Incorporate Pieces That Go With Your Wedding Theme
#block-yui_3_17_2_1_1666644507414_53163 .sqs-gallery-block-grid .sqs-gallery-design-grid { margin-right: -20px; }#block-yui_3_17_2_1_1666644507414_53163 .sqs-gallery-block-grid .sqs-gallery-design-grid-slide .margin-wrapper { margin-right: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; }
If you are leaning towards a certain theme for your wedding day, I would highly suggest incorporating pieces into your wedding flatlays that reflect that theme. If you are leaning towards something more classic and retro, adding in a more timeless piece may be the secret sauce to elevating your flatlay. Whichever you choose though, just make sure that it flows!
At the end of the day, creating and designing your flatlay should be a fun process. It’s a way to incorporate a more personal element to your wedding photos and of course, have your photos be absolutely GORGEOUS.
